Wrote... To teach your dog to walk on a lead without pulling: 1. Stand with your dog on the lead and do not move your hands while hilding the lead - only when the lead is relaxed and the dog is not pulling, give him a treat. Repeat this at least lesson at least once a day. 2. Walk your dog a few steps - if he pulls, stop and wait until he relaxes on the lead. Give him a treat. Repeat this at least once a day. 3. When you leave for your daily walk, take a few steps and if he pulls on the lead - stop. Wait and don't move on until the lead is relaxed! Only then give him another treat and continue walking. 4. Repeat until the dog always walks with a relaxed lead. It may take a very long time to get where you are going but you will be teaching your dog each time you go for a walk that you will not accept him pulling on the lead. Good luck!

Wrote... I lost my Lab today, she developed Necroptic Pancreatitis and Peritonitis which in dog language means ouch but she wasn't yet three years old and she was also epileptic (had seizures) so she couldn't be a mother though she would have been a really good one. She was first in her second year of Dog obedience and she was the friendliest dog ever, unless you smell like goats (she didn't like that smell) but now you know how I found you and your baby pictures remind me of her.

I was a bit fearful of adopting and adult dog at first, however, Maggie and is rapidly winning my heart. She is smart, sweet natured and fun to be around. Wrote... Our 21/2 year old black Lab, Daisy passed away this weeend with what the vet diagnosed as pneumonia. The onset first appeared on 10/31 as a hacking. On 11/01 she was taken to the vet where he diagnosed pneumonia and perscirbed a a regimen of anitbiotics. On Saturday evening she passed away with the medication having no effect whatsoever. My daughter who lives in CT. checked with some vet friends she knows who say that from the sypmtoms described, eg., fast moving, profuse bleeding from the mouth and nose at death, no rectal bleeding, no reaction to the antibiotics,that it probably was a very fast moving lung carcinoma. This one can apprently reach grapefruit size from one cell in a matter of a couple of days. Since it typically occurs in dogs under 3, so most vets in the midwest don't check for it, (x-ray). I guess my question is have you heard heard of this in labs before? I'm told that it's fairly common in golden retreivers. If so, would you know if it's a genetic thing? I'm considering another female from the same parents. Anything you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bill

Wrote... Hi Ben, you are so lucky to have your own site, my dad has had a website running for a while, but the spot where my picture is supposed to go still says "insert cody's picture here". I guess i am less important to him than his car that features in it a number of times! Despite my lack of publicity, i still have many adoring fans, such as my tigger soft toy and big stuffed fluffy yellow duck. They like to sleep on my cushion each night with me and if they forget to walk there themselves then i give them a lift in my mouth instead. They also enjoy hanging out with me during the day, I am halfway through pulling all off tiggers fluff out, he said it was really itching his insides, a dog is obliged to help. I regret to inform you that i am not a labrador of any colour, but am a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Mum used to own a lab x though and knows how lovely they are. I must admit however that i hear her say she couldn't imagine a better dog then me!

Wrote... Hi Ben, My wife and I recently purchased a 9 week old Yellow Lab. "Marina" has had a trying week, teaching her all the house training basics. She however, likes to nip at our pants, sandals, or fingers. We have scolded her, commanded NO, tapped her on the nose, and praised her when she's good. They just put in a big airditioner for me to sleep under hence my favourite pastime is sleeping. I get confused because sometimes they call me Wallis and at other times I frequnelt here the term Airditioner Dog. Dad takes me walking every day and we chase ducks and anything else that moves for hours and I show him my championship retrieving skills by ensuring I bring nothing back and usually leave it floating in the middle of the creek so that he has to wade in to get it!I figure he needs to pratice what he preaches. I was rather offended the other day when my Parents told friends that my real name is Stealth Dog because I always appear asleep (it is a trap for the unwary I tell you) and that the only way I could stop a burglar is if Dad threw me at them! I dreaded having a pup because of that reason. Wow, they are smart dogs. She already will fetch, sit, lay down. I have her fetching throw dummies. She won't leave the front yard. She is amazing. Is this common among this breed.

Wrote... I have a 10 yr old black lab named Herschel. Herschel has hip displacure and stays inside the house most of the day. His problem is that he sheds hair very badly. He will leave patches of fallen hair on the floor where he has laid. I try to brush him and he even likes to have the vaccum cleaner go over his coat. Is this (shedding) typical? Wrote... I have a two year old male I keep in a kennel. have a problem with him tearing up metal feeders and alawys turning over his watering bucket. Have tried tying them down and eveything else i could think of. Is there any thing out there that can stand up to him. have to water him five to six times daily. He will just knock it over. Also the feeder is an automatic feeder, made of metal. He constantly turns it over to where his feed gets wet and know the feeder is coming apart. I'm in Law enforcement so it's hard for me to come by and check on him. Worry about him not having the water mostly. what can I do? Ron

Wrote... hi ben, i have a question that i thought you may be able to help me with. three years ago i purchased a chocolate lab male pup as a pet for my wife. i have his pedigree papers etc., we are not interested in showing or retrievig etc., but we have been approached by some breeders with regards to a stud service. we, basically have no idea as to what to charge or the proceedures etc. his pedigree, so they tell me is very good as he does not have any yellow in his lines at all, he is also more of a person to us than a dog and we love him heaps. i hope you might be able to give us an idea where to start. another thing, he has a skin irritation, and around $700.00 later and four different vets do not seem to know what it is, he just has small red spots on his underside and scratches a lot. we have tried diets, washes almost everything. i know this is not a ask dr. harry site but anything is worth a try!! great site.
